    • I noticed that. I sent an email to sunflower not associated with Super-Value requesting clarification, but they haven't responded yet.

    • Good to see you on this board. Looks like patience will pay off on UNFI.

    • Actually, SuperValu seems to be cooperating with the other Sunflower Market since the web sites for both "Sunflowers" have a link to "the other Sunflower Market": www.sunflowermarket.*** (***=com)

      1. Your thread of thought is exactly what the suppliers pre-existance of UNFI represented. and as they were gobbled up by the now "unfi" and category management.

the presence of local and small maker of artisan goods are virtually non existant in UNFIs warehouse and Large Corporate stores are allowed to direct buy many artisan local goods. The cost of distributing the little guy is not condusive to the cost of real estate (warehouses)and delivery.

Most again, is done by much smaller privately owned dsd programs. the cost of goods is much higher and with a unfi up charge, you the public would not afford these goods.

      2. The Organic awarness is growing. The industry in consistant with double digits. But, the cooperatives and the boutique business generally extract the profits, not from the daily customer. but, from the mom and the families that squeeze the foods into the budget. With mass market comes lower prices at the stores, its all about the 80/20 rule. Ragu Organic? Organic heinz? V-8 Organic?

The major retailers are struggling and more and more Bankrupt. Need to say more? They will go toe to toe and sell it cheap. You need to look closely and see who is the owners of the majorlines. Muir glen, small planet, trinity water, Healthy Valley. On and on it goes the industry consolidation. The founders of the Organic foods and the shakers movers are cashinonin

We are shifting dollars from the majors and They want the ring back at the till, and will by lowering costs of Organics to you and drawing you back in. remember 80/20 (how is the local coffe shop doing against Starbucks? I can get my starbucks and my grocerys(Organic) all at Target. Who is benifitting? the awarness brings pressure to compete. put your lil coffee shop across from Starbucks in average USA and what happens? Where did the long term retailers in every town USA go? Are they making it next to Walmart? (Please) though I wish you were right, your wrong.

3.Sorry, this is officail. ask unfi how cheese sales are to whole foods? ( virtually 100% self supplied Now) Look at what UNFI is selling, The ALberts perishables and produce division.private labled cheese ( poorly performing at that) and the beef that isnt even USA grown, its all from Paraguay!!!!!

The trucks are infact backing up at the doors !!

4.I wish for the good of all commerce you were right. but, your romatically optimistic. Ride this one to where it will go. Be bought out as they bought up who they are now, or ride it to where others who onced soared are now, lost and gone.Ask UNFI What happened to the poision pill? why did management write in severance packages for: in the event of being sold? problem is who would buy them? A-hold or super valu simply needs to do is, assign a sku and a warehouse slot and move itin.

TIME WILL TELL, WHY OH WHY DID STEVE TOWNSEND GO? WHERE OH WERE DID RICK PUCKETT GO? WHY OH WHY DID THEY GO? foOD DISTRIBUTION IS TOUGH AND ESPECAILLY IF YOU ONLY HAVE A % OF THE OTHER PLAYERS OFFERING AND YOUr BIGGEST CUSTOMER IS THE SCORPION AND YOUR THE FROG.
WHERE IS UNFI WITHOUT WHOLE FOODS?

coNCLUSION.. LOOK AT YOUR OWN STAEMENT WERE IN THE PROCESS DOES unfi fit?

    • I don't know much about distributing organics, and I know even less about UNFI, but I've been giving this thread some thought.

      1) It seems like the value of an UNFI would be as an interface between the increasingly large retailers and the fairly small producers, of which there are still many. They need someone in the middle.

      2) Whole foods and SVU may not turn out to be category killers. In fact, like Starbucks and coffee, they may wake up a lot of people to the benefits of organics and so create a larger organics market in which more retailers can prosper, including the boutiques.

      3) Kraft and Campbells aren't going to take over the organics sector. This isn't going to be a situation where a big distributor is backing the truck up to the Velveeta factory to get a month's supply of Henry's Willamette Valley Organic Goat Cheese for a thousand Whole Foods Markets across the country. That's oxymoronic, and if it does start happening people will stop going to Whole Foods and start going where they can find the good stuff.

Consumers are changing this industry, and companies like Whole Foods are catalysts for change. They're the Wal-mart of natural foods. They will change the way natural foods are grown, processed and distributed. This change is still taking plance, and UNFI has a chance to be a player in the process.

    • Where did Michael Funk come from? How many Cooperative warehouses provided 10 years ago?and how many now? (2) Both without a retail program, where did the others go? WHAT IS UNFI made up of? what is the purchasing $$$ of the NCGA? $800 million. (national coop assoc.) What is UNFI sales virtually 80%

Hain vs General Mills = AlI VS. Miss Piggy, The point is that Organics is no longer a botique business... its big! Hain, Kraft, Smuckers, General Mills Ect. are the players.
They have big vested intrests in the main grocer suppliers.

UNFI vs.Super Valu? UNFI STEAM rolled over the warehouses and they are now entering into an arena they are not well prepared for.

They have been arrogant and lacking the ability to connect with those they serve.
They do not have a Professionals to compete in virtually all levels from Management to Sales to Point of Delivery.

They pay poor vs. Industry standards except in the executive circle around Mr. Funk ( look at Towndsends stock sales)

Michael and his people are a free enterprise genius and made truck loads of money.

Careful what you wish for! Organics is officailly mainstream. Look at whole foods and what have they done too protect from being just Organic??? They are now balanced with conventional and natural with a unmatched branded private lable line.

Within the next year the major houses will or already have the 80/20 rule covered. What does that leave for the growth of UNFI? A SHORT RUN! And then as stale as outdated bread.

Please tell me what do you know? what lays ahead for UNFI? What is going to happen to thier core customers with convienance and mass marketing now into play and every one now selling Organics.

Commodity trading is what is happening. I look forward to your enlightening thoughts.
      Thank you for your time.

    • Cash

You are right on the money.I am sure u r the industry.

See you at EXPO west in March

    • UPDATE!!!! Super Valu planned 50 Sunflower stores over the next 5 years.... NOW 250 in the next 5years.

They are and will be growing theline more and more everyday. Look at the store tags, Super target and other SuperValu supplied stores.
UNFI exclusive with what retailer for natural foods? backfilling out of stocks? UNFI has alienated many or most potentail customers with poor service $10.00 gas fees and high margin distribution.

Super Valu, Tree of life, Whole Foods (smart money is your the #1 Organic retailer and you are really not that far from self supply. Become a competitor for distribution.) Kehe, Publix? self supply andprivate lable, direct from the manufacturer.

Where are the retailers going to come from tio buy from UNFI? Organics is achieving the goal of those who pionnered it to become mainstream for the masses. RAGU! HIENZ!Smuckers, ect.

SO convienance comes to play with main stream. who controls convienance? Bigger companies than UNFI. As the small organic retailer go's away so does a big% of UNFI

    • I am sorry you are wrong here, that is not what we are talking about. Sunflower is the "NEW" launch by Super Valu . My perception is they are a discount midscale reatailer focused on a afordable Organic shopping exp. Whole Foods is not what they are competing against. Sunflower concept is more traderjoes or the old local grocer 10,000 square feet. I know the intail team from super valu who were developing the program. Again I am from the industry. UNFI is a collabrative of old Cooperative Warehouses that were bought up as Organics continue to become mainstream.

You do not need the expertise that the business once was, any one can deliver Organic Heinz or Amys...... The Organic product once a group of small manufacters is now General Mills, Kraft, Hain, Amys, Ect. whos boat do you think they will float?
