I thought beef was going to be a bargain, due to the drought.
Top Round steak at $4.49 (weekly ad sale price) per pound isn't exactly inexpensive.

I don't follow live cattle but can you explain how it was expected to rise on the drought?

The story is that the drought is causing ranchers to have to sell off more of their herds earlier to keep them from dieing of thirst, so that will create a temporary abundance of meat in the supermarket for a short time, causing temporarily lower prices. Then right after that there will be a shortage of that same meat at the supermartket, sending prices back up even higher than before the drought.

Top Round is hardly one of the better cuts. But it's good for stir frys or steak sands with roasted peppers, caramelized onions, mayo, mustard, and cheese of choice.
When I was a kid, chuck steak was actually pretty tasty. The supermarket beef today doesn't taste anything close to what it did back then. And, once in a while, my Mom would cook a Sirloin Tip Roast. Rare, and studded with garlic. It was Fantastic, and better tasting than any Supermarket Prime Rib Roast I've purchased or cooked in the last 25 years. Something is wrong with our food chain...
