If you look at the volume for the DJIA for today it is listed as 1 205 200 000. How do they come up with that number? If you add the volume for each of the 30 dow components you get 580 439 730 shares. I dont understand? The same goes for the S&P 500. If you add all the individual companies stock volume for the day you dont get 3.4 billion. Ultimately does anyone know where I can get the true volume of the DOW and S&P 500 on an intraday bases. It seems the only way to get it is at the end of the day?
I think one is shares traded and the other is trades. Each trade has a buyer and a sell. (shares traded x 2) If you double your 580,439,730 number you get 1,160,879,460... which is very close to the larger number you typed above.
