Our currency is designed to lose 2% of its value to inflation every year as a specific monetary policy goal. Its done to benefit the government by elevating tax receipts on higher nominal economic activity, and by lowering the real cost of Treasury debt. It helps the business economy by encouraging people to buy and consume now rather than paying a higher price later. It also gives businesses a wonderful excuse to continuously raise prices at much higher rates than inflation.
Everybody is pretty much happy except those who get burned on their investments, for them it is instability and ruin.
