WHB, thanks for posting the article. I knew the rate was high. I think a lot has to due with the obvious - smoking and stress. Of the 4 DOD branches of service, USARMY has the highest stressors. Also, one other factor was alluded to in the article. Many soldiers never smoked before joining. Espirit 'D corps is a big factor -- if your buddy is doing it, everybody should do it. It is so strong that even though I didnt smoke, I did start dipping Skoal from my 20s to early 30s. I only stopped dipping because of my Commander's suggestion that it wasnt professional to see a CPT spitting out used tobacco product in front of subordinates as well as superiors. That was my cue to think about my habit. I decided to quit a few weeks later. I did try it a few times over the years and truthfully, it is quite nasty.
The USARMY does have Tobacco Cessation classes. They are only voluntary. And strangely enough, the classes are held at the ASAP BLDG - Army Substance Abuse Program. So even though tobacco is an abused substance, it is freely used in the USARMY.
