SIVB is finally getting some recognition as a bellweather stock. As more people are believing that the economy is turning this baby could lead the pack. As many private tech companies have waited years for liquidity SIVB's Alliant strategy is just beginning to pay off. Very upbeat conf. call re:Alliant. New Board member Peter Goodson has serious M&A as well as Inv. Bnkg. experience. Recent announcement of opening Boston Office confirms effort to take West Coast boutique nationwide. Alliant should be major contributor to 2004 profits. Watch for significant profit contributions in 2004 from increased deposits generated by VC's stepped up funding of portfolio companies. Lastly, big spurt in profits from increase in interest rates. Greenspan is trying to be convincing that rates will remain low "forever" but IMO rates will begin their move up as soon as Q2 2004. The Fed will return to their historical role as inflation fighter as soon as the economy shows signs of heating up. My animadversions will have more validity when Q4 (2003) results are posted in Jan. Look for results at the high end of guidance (34c to 38c).
