The idea that the FDA should approve a drug because of pressure from Congress is absurd. That being said, pressure to make an approval happen much faster, all while following the proper FDA procedures, makes sense to me from a patient advocacy perspective as well as a scientific one.
What you say is true, but members of Congress wouldn't get on board a sinking ship. No chance. Their political future rides on it, and like it or not, there is another election in 18 short months. This is one of those classic "feel good" opportunities Congress looks for, the picture perfect "photo op" setting.
