Will be interesting to see what they (Valero) does.
By Harvey Rice
GALVESTON – The Texas City school district is among four taxpayer-funded entities in Galveston County that will have to repay Valero almost $5 million after a jury agreed that the oil company’s Texas City refinery was overvalued on the tax rolls.
Texas City, Galveston County and the College of the Mainland will also have to pay back the giant San Antonio-based refiner. The Texas City school district has to pay $2.45 million, the largest share.
There will undoubtedly be a community backlash if VLO takes all the money. They will be portrayed as a Greedy Company that is currently making a filty amount of easy, easy money and now they are seeking to also take even more money from hard-pressed School District and needy children
Not sure what VLO will do but I am guessing that the last thing they wil do is cash all the checks without returning any to the school district.
Who needs the public relations headache?
If Valero was was worried about public relations, why did they contest the taxes and sue in the first place? I would hope after winning, they get the money. They were being over taxed and are due a refund. So it was Valero's money they are getting back to begin with.
I am sure Valero is big tax payer for that district. Some districts like to milk the cow to death.
If Valero takes the money back like I hope, yes, they will probably be portrayed as the "bad guy" not the big employer and tax payer that they are.
