Can the U.S. afford another stimulus package?

Congress wants to give us one soon:

"Schumer and other Democratic leaders also backed plans by House Speaker Nancy Pelsoi, D-Calif., for a session after the Nov. 4 election to consider a $150 billion proposal to boost the economy.

The measure would extend jobless benefits, provide more money for food stamps and finance public works projects such as rebuilding bridges and roads.

"Yes, we are going to do a stimulus" after the election, said Rep. Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. The idea is "give the middle-class and the average citizen the same kind of relief that we try to give the financial sector," said Frank, D-Mass., who like Schumer appeared on the Sunday talk shows. "

Maybe we should spend this money on ourselves. It's only a drop in the bucket compared to the trillions being spent on the financials.

But why in the hell are we spending billions on Iraq and Afganistan. We spend billions more on troop bases all over the world. This is a luxury we can no longer afford. If this nation goes broke we may not be able to pay for the defense of our physical borders. What happened to the military power of the Roman empire? It went broke! Let's not go down that road.

McCain and Bush. You're supposed to vote for these clowns because they promise to protect us from unseen ragheads hidden somewhere in desolate mountains thousands of miles from our borders. This should not be a political debate. It should be a financial debate. We cannot afford our military adventurism. Let's start focusing on the financial security of our future generations.

Sorry. I like to rant on Sundays.
