    MER turning positive on Semis

    US Investment Strategy
Was the Tech Bubble and Deflation a Y2K Fluke? (Bulletin Available)
Long-term industrial machinery capacity trends suggest to us that the worst of the
technology investment excesses have been purged. Some portion of the excesses may
have been caused by Y2K compliance spending.
The relative performance of the technology sector and Nasdaq in cyclical and secular
time horizons is linked to improving capacity growth.
Shorter-term fluctuations in capacity growth show that improvement may have begun in
    the third quarter of 2000.
If capacity growth has normalized, then order patterns for technology-related equipment
should firm in the third quarter of 2001.
Investors should accumulate shares in contract manufacturing, data storage, enterprise
software, semis, and semi capital equipment.
