Miami Project just got FDA approval to start Phase I trial using patient derived Schwann Cells for Chronic spinal chord injury. InVivo is working with the Miami project and the Schwann Cells are being considered as additive to the Scaffold. Using Cells with Scaffold would be follow ups to Scaffold alone and Scaffold with Methylprednisolone. Schwanns cells remylinate axons of the Peripheral nervous system individually however Geron's OPC1's remylinate axons of the Central nervous system (spinal chord)and can remylinate multiple axons so I believe OPC1's would be the better choice for a trial. I'm assuming Ed Wirth with his knowledge of OPC1's is promoting that idea.
Fantastic news-I hope the FDA now approves In Vivo's human trials--In Vivo does have a collaboration with the Miami Project--I think Schwann cells will be more effective when used in conjunction with In Vivo's scaffold technology than either alone
Hey bob, great find. Hopefully we get scaffold only approved and installed in the 5 patients so that we can move to scaffold with hesc or schwan cells next. I would love to see opc1 used with the scaffold but isnt the miami project already in a deal with nviv or is what occurs next still open. Steve
