disease that affects less than than 4,000 people in the U.S. per year

Cambridge-based InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp. (NVIV), a developer of spinal cord injury treatments, has filed a request with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Humanitarian Use Device (HUD) designation of its biopolymer scaffolding product.

The FDA designation is for a device that will benefit patients by treating or diagnosing a disease that affects less than than 4,000 people in the U.S. per year. Because a device manufacturer’s research and development costs may be highert than its market returns, the HUD provision provides an incentive for the development of devices.

    Sentiment: Strong Sell
