Is "junk silver" worth having? Or is it junk?

Seems this "junk silver" that comes in bags from places like Miles Franklin and APMEX might be just that---junk. Those 9999 Canadian Maples seem to be about the purest coin around.

There are rumors that Perth Mint is selling out of quite a few coins and it seems to me that the Royal Canadian Mint with it's 9999 pure products might get some attention here for purity.

    Any ideas?

    • Well I think you are right about the Canadian Maple Leafs. They usually sell at a discount to American Eagles and they have a face value that is $4 over American Eagles.

I found a good deal at www.goldcoinsgain.com on Canadian Maple Leafs that were about $3 less / coin than Apmex. You might be able to get a good deal from Apmex if you haven't placed an order yet online using your cell phone. They have a mobile site that was offering free shipping on your first order this way. I like the mint direct program they have considering all the counterfeiting going on now.

The term "junk silver" was coined to downplay the bebasement of our currency following the switch from silver in 1965.

The only "junk" is post 1964 currency.
