Echelon Corporation (ELON) Message Board

    Echelon Friends

Echelon success is a good thing.

After reading the second China PR it looks very promising for Echelon. China meter deal has huge potential! My liking Ambient does not mean I don’t like Echelon. The only reason I post on Echelon board is because I believe an investor that is smart enough to see the “forest through trees” potential of a company Like Echelon before the herd does, would also be able to see the future potential of a company like Ambient.

They both have ONE huge pioneer of smart-grid as a partner and customer in the USA (Duke).

Echelon is bigger has more products and more customer.

Ambient is small, and currently has one customer, is profitable, growing, and focused like a laser beam on the node and the network management system.

BOTH PREACH PLC. IT’S A BIG WORLD. A PLC WIN IS A WIN TO ME! GO ELON! GO AMBT!

    • There are "Utility apps" for the Grid, see Duke White Paper for specifics. (Ambient)

      and

      There are "Consumer apps" for
appliances in the home, the ev in the garage and the street lights on the sidewalks (the Edge of the Grid) (Echelon)

Duke Sees a Future With Cellular

The iPhone references in the smart grid world usually revolve around consumer-facing apps that will be unleashed once smart meters and communications networks are in place.

But what about on the grid itself?

For Duke Energy, it sees every communication node “as an iPhone for the modern grid” in terms of building a future-proof and dynamic network, according to the recent white paper, “Duke Energy: Developing the Communications Platform to Enable a More Intelligent Electric Grid.”

The paper, authored by David Masters, Manager of Technology Development for Duke Energy, and issued at DistribuTECH, lays out a potential communications network for the mega-utility. There’s a little bit of mesh radio, a dose of powerline communications, and a commitment to leverage public carriers.

Note; The Duke White Paper was issued at Distributech in Feb 2011

Tulsa, Okla., February 3, 2011 — DistribuTECH, the largest U.S. conference that covers the smart grid from end to end, finishes a week of industry conference sessions and business meetings at the San Diego Convention Center today with record-breaking registration numbers.

    • The Ambient supporters claim the android/iPhone mode reference as Ambient's as well...

    • For f sake zap, if you read p7 you will note the reference to the node being like an "iPhone" not just a "phone". What's the difference? for one the iphone has apps and a normal phone doesn't. It is also the same analogy used by Echelon at the kickoff of Ecos. "Think iphone" Ron Sege. Also, at the smart grid roadshow in Cincinnati last year a spokesperson for Duke noted that they use Ambient but that it was "awefully expensive". Bob Dolin was sitting front and center when it was said and had a smirk on his face. I look back today and think Bob knew something was coming. Good luck with Ambient. I used to trade it. Now, it seems like a one trick poney. This is never a good thing in technology. Always innovate or die.

    • If I may, this is the greatest argument I have ever witnessed on a forum...

    • ELON Board:

      dc10/zapzoot are sickos. Period.

They have ruined the Ambient Board.

      Zapzoot is already making threatening

      statements here.

Do not get infected by the dc10/zap virus.

    • Zapzoot and Dchasbeen... I think there is mis-communication...the photos you refer to may indeed show ambient hardware. It may also be that NOW that Echelon has competing hardware that matches the specifications SF-ELON has repeating stated as Duke wishing to implement, whereas the Ambient hardware does not. Duke is still installing Ambient and appears likely to continue in Ohio. But further roll outs in other states may be much more problematic for Ambient if Echelon products, AFTER TESTING, prove superior or at least more to Duke's liking. That is all there is to argument. For now, we do not know future. We do know Duke has been using Ambient up to now. Now please, let it go. Keep future Ambient posts to Ambient board please. SF-ELON has been valued DD poster for Echelon for years and not a "fraud" of any kind. The posts listed on another blurb here refer to his posting after numerous Ambient posts on Echelon board and the over heated debate about nodes. Let it go.

    • I claim nothing. Why won't you answer these 2 simple questions?

      here they are again...

here are my 2 simple questions for you again...

sf_elon To be clear, whose centerpiece node do you believe is pictured in the Duke White Paper - Slide 6 graphic, Echelon or Ambient?

If you believe it is Echelon, then please explain what the function is of the node that Ambient has already provided to the Duke Smart grid, amounting to $60 million in
delivered/installed nodes, and another $60 million more in back order for their node?

      Thanks

    • Now you are claiming:

      1) Master's isn't telling the truth when he states that "Some aspects of the digital grid approach and architecture described herein may not be presently available as part of Duke Energy’s current digital grid deployment"

      And you are claiming:

      2) Ambient nodes deployed in Ohio have both A and C band Lonworks PLC and full functionality described in the white paper.

    • why won't you answer the 2 simple questions?

The Duke White Paper summary last page states that hundreds of thousands of NODES, meters, sensors etc have already been successfully deployed. That is not a vision, that is a deployment!...Now again...

here are my 2 simple questions for you again...

sf_elon To be clear, whose centerpiece node do you believe is pictured in the Duke White Paper - Slide 6 graphic, Echelon or Ambient?

    • The image on page 6 is a depiction of Duke's smart grid vision. The specification of which are laid out in the text.

"Some aspects of the digital grid approach and architecture described herein may not be presently available as part of Duke Energy’s current digital grid deployment, but these aspects, together with the other items discussed herein, represent Duke Energy’s overall vision of the digital grid that we hope to realize in the near future."
