Austria: Kamstrup opens Austria office to support smart-meter rollout

Wien Energie apparently runs a 1400 meter pilot with Kapsch/Echelon and a 1000 meter pilot with Kamstrup for its 1.5m meter rollout. My seat-of-the-pants guess is that both will be finalists when Wien decides in May 2014. If you look at Wien Energie's website, they even say the pilot meters won't be uninstalled.

Kamstrup has opened an office in Austria in response to national regulatory directives requiring utility companies to install smart meters at homes and businesses throughout the country.

The Danish smart-meter specialist is already conducting a 1,000-unit pilot with Energie Wien (Vienna, Austria) and appears keen to position itself for follow-on opportunities.

“Austria has … decided to adopt the European regulatory roadmap for full-scale introduction of smart meters and smart metering,” said Lars Bo Kristensen, a director at Kamstrup (Skanderborg, Denmark). “Being 100% focused on smart metering we wish to support this national rollout and provide an even closer service to existing and coming customers in Austria and this is best done in Austria.”

European legislation demands that smart meters be provided to 80% of electricity consumers across the region by the end of 2020, but Austrian authorities have unveiled an even more ambitious target of serving 95% of consumers by the end of 2019.

Through the pilot with Energie Wien, Kamstrup says that 1,000 consumers will receive smart meters by the summer of this year.

The company has announced that Wolfgang Haager will take charge of its new Austrian facility.

“We see a great potential for our intelligent water meters and smart electricity meters in Austria, providing integrated smart meter solutions,” said Haager. “The main focus of our new organization is to deepen our customer relationships and provide a closer cooperation in this trade.”

Kamstrup says the Austrian office will also function as a hub, allowing it to enter new markets and expand activities in the Danube area.
