award..doesn't mean much,.. but illustrates Echelon innovation, etc...

Echelon CEO and Chairman Ron Sege was honored by Frost & Sullivan as a Legend of Silicon Valley, along with 11 other recipients. The honor was bestowed during Frost & Sullivan’s third annual Growth, Innovation and Leadership (GIL) conference, GIL 2013: Silicon Valley, held Sept. 8 – 11 in San Jose, Calif.

The GIL conferences focus on “driving growth and inspiring innovation across industries,” according to Frost & Sullivan. This year’s Silicon Valley forum brought together a panel of 12 pioneers – the 2013 Legends of Silicon Valley – to lead a provocative and interactive discussion focused around the future of innovation in Silicon Valley.

During the panel discussion, Echelon’s Sege drew attention to the emerging leadership opportunity for Silicon Valley in the Industrial Internet, a subset of the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Industrial Internet brings together communities of devices equipped with networked sensors and controllers to collect data, analyze it in real time, and act upon it to adjust operation. Compared to the consumer-oriented IoT for automating household systems, the Industrial Internet—which could in real time optimize the lighting, air conditioning, security and shade configuration for individual occupants within a large building, as well as the power availability on the electric grid at that time—has extremely high reliability requirements and, in many cases, the need for instantaneous response. The platform used to create both the IoT and the Industrial Internet will enable applications that can perform a virtually limitless range of functions.

“The Industrial Internet will fundamentally change how the world communicates and interacts, and Echelon is building an open-standard platform that that will enable a vast ecosystem of industrial devices and applications on the Industrial Internet,” Sege said. “It’s been estimated that the innovations within the Industrial Internet, through better management of processes and industrial systems, will yield $1.3 trillion in value by 2020. Silicon Valley will both drive innovations in this area and reap enormous benefits from the new ecosystem.”

Andrew Keen, CNN columnist and the host of the popular TechCrunch chat show "Keen On," moderated the GIL Legends of Silicon Valley discussion. Panelists covered topics such as “what makes Silicon Valley unique,” what key trends to expect, and how companies should prepare their workforces for the future. In addition to Ron Sege, the 2013 Legends panelists were:

Charles Berger, President and CEO, Extreme Networks, Inc.
    Lloyd Carney, CEO, Brocade
Timothy Draper, Founder and Managing Director, Draper Fisher Jurvetson
    Elizabeth Fetter, CEO, Symmetricom, Inc.
Thomas J Fogarty, M.D., Founder and Chairman, Fogarty Institute for Innovation
    Guy Gecht, CEO, EFI
    HP Jin, CEO, Telenav
Steven Laub, President and CEO, Atmel
Patrick Lo, Chairman and CEO, NETGEAR
    Marcus Ryu, CEO, Guidewire
Ken Xie, Founder, President, and CEO, Fortinet
The prestigious GIL Legend of Silicon Valley awards were presented at an Awards Gala at the conclusion of GIL 2013: Silicon Valley, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose.
