    A dispute

Hello - My friend and I are having a dispute over a distribution. He's touts himself as a, so-called, daytrader expert. He purchased SJT in the AM, before the ex-date and sold it the same day, in the PM. He says he will get the distribution, while I'm not sure, I disagree, since the trade, as far as I understand, never had the two days needed to settle.

    Anyone, know for sure?

    • To receive the dividend you must own the stock the day before the ex-div date through closing on that day.
You can sell on the ex-div date and still get the dividend. If you sell before the ex-div date, like your friend, you forfeit the dividend.
      Hope that helps,
      Doc G

    • If he sold it the same day (last day for inclusion of div.)then he will not get the dividend. He would have had to have owned it at the close of business. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The stock is discounted the amount of the dividend on opening on ex-div day and he thought he could avoid that. No way.
