I started following the rurals when Alltel spun-off their landlines. To my knowledge, there are:
Windstream (WIN) - the old Alltel Warwick Valley (WWVY) Frontier (FTR) - the old Citizen Fairpoint (FRP) Consolidated Communications (CNSL) Iowa Communications (IWA) Hickory Tech (HTCO)
These pay really good dividends. While cable and cell phones are taking some of the business from them, I don't see landlines vaporizing. This is a sector that is ripe with consolidation (CNSL, FRP, and FTR) and spin-offs from that nationals (T, VZ, and Q) being acquired by the rurals.
I also own Frontier (FTR) which just changed its name from Citizens. Dividend is over 8 percent. They are in northeast and in pockets all over the country. Also have a lot of cable and getting bigger into fiberoptics big time. Basically function like Virizon, without the wireless play. What I like about ALSK is they have wireless also and Alaska is ready to boom.
