Xperia Z sells 140k units in first week in Japan

The Sony Xperia Z (SO-02E) launched in Japan through NTT DoCoMo on the 9th February. Reports are suggesting that around 140,000 units have been sold during the first week. DoCoMo representatives described the performance as a “fairly encouraging start” (translated). The handset sits atop on the smartphone league tables in Japan, as you would expect considering it has just launched. It will be interesting to see how it fares once the initial hype has died down.

    • !40,000 in the FIRST week means a complete failure. Iphone sold more that that in the first minute. And recall this is in Japan where people are supposedly partial. I hear it "sold out" in France; that is great but I wonder how many were provided there; of course anything provided in low enough numbers when first placed on sale generally sells out.

I just don't see how after their major failure when they introduced the "S" tablet in December, their "Z" tablets and or smartphones are going to do any different. Their PS4 flop presentation one last week shows what an incompetent company Sony has become and that at least in the short and medium terms the company and its stock are set for a rude awakening.

      Sentiment: Hold

      • 140'000 units in the first week with only one carrier NTT DoCoMo in japan is a very good start.
The xperia z smartphone is a game changer for sony it's the best smartphone in the market actually and the first time Sony has made a smartphone who can compete with the Iphone 5 and galaxy S3.
i've bought it myself in Switzerland and can tell you first hand than it's much better than the Iphone 5.

The only rival i see is the next Galaxy S4 which has been delayed due to some problems with the Samsung proprietary CPU and will not be widely available until this summer at least.

Sony expect to sell 50 M smartphones in the next fiscal year ending in march 2014 up from 30 M in the previous fiscal year ending in march 2013.

        Sentiment: Strong Buy

    • Let me guess... Overpriced. Proprietary accessories. Full of software glitches. Poor customer support. Does that about nail it?
