In a press-release dated April 25, 2012, Letter to Shareholders, Marathon Patent Group (MARA) of Alexandria, VA states that it is suing Sony (and other blue chip companies) for a patent infringement. The information is buried in the press release. Marathon Patent Group has amassed a team of intellectual property pioneers. This list includes Doug Croxall formerly at LVL Patent Group, Nate Bradley formerly of Augme, Doug Bender formerly of Augme, Matt DelGiorno formerly of IP Navigation Group, and a number of directors and advisors who are veterans of the industry including William Rosellini of Lexington Technology Group, Craig Nard, a law professor at Case Western and a senior lecturer at the World Intellectual Property Organization Academy in Torino, Italy, and Erich Spangenberg, founder of IP Navigation Group. Also, Marathon Patent Group has the financial resources as Hudson Bay Capital Management and GRQ Consultants, two serial institutional investors in micro-cap stocks. Marathon Patent Group has a tiny capitalization of about $20 million compared to $1.1 billion for VirnetX (VHC) and $200 million for Vringo (VRNG). It seems like Marathon is there for the long-term and that it is one of the first vertically integrated IP companies as the companies acquires patents, helps companies monetize patents, fill patent holes and defend themselves from patent trolls. Is this material for Sony?
