Is it true that the total number of Gaucher patients worldwide, is 10,000?

    • Yahoo would not let me post a reply. I think their filter finds the name of my ethnicity offensive - probably an extremely stupid way to handle the antisemitic posts popping up every now and then. I will try with just "J" instead of the full name.

I don't really know, but has the number you mentioned:

"It is estimated that approximately 1 in 40,000 to 60,000 people in the general population have Gaucher disease, or about 10,000 people worldwide. Among J's of Ashkenazi (Eastern European) descent, the incidence is higher: up to 1 in 450 people. The higher frequency of Gaucher disease among this population has led to the misconception that Gaucher disease is a "J'ish genetic disease,” but in fact, individuals of any ethnic or racial background may be affected."

Now let's do some math. First, let's assume that:
      (1) - The world population is 7 billion,
      (2) - The incidence in the general population is 1 in 50,000, and
      (3) - The effect of Askenazi J's on the world-wide statistics is negligible (we are not aiming at high precision here).

      In that case, the probable number is 7,000,000,000 / 50,000 = 140,000

Obviously, there is an error somewhere. Is it in assumption (2) - the incidence? Or, is that 10,000 number incorrect?
