"Orange is the New Black " looks to be another homerun for LGF's TV business. Netflix already ordered the second season prior to the new show's debut yesterday. It's getting great reviews and seems to have that addictive sticky quality that will get viewers hooked.
"Fleet Street" which LGF is doing with Virgin for Starz looks equally as interesting to me as another period show like "Madmen".
Lionsgate TV producing project tracking rise of tabloid culture in 1970s London
Starz is diving into the Fleet Street fray, developing a period drama set among London’s tabloids in the 1970s with Piers Morgan, Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced shingle and Lionsgate TV.
“Fleet Street” will revolve around the rise of the hedonistic tabloid culture in Blighty as seen through the eyes of an American journo. Danny Brocklehurst, whose credits include the U.K. rendition of “Shameless,” will pen the pilot and exec produce with Morgan, Virgin Produced’s Jason Felts, Justin Berfield and Michael Forman and Octagon Entertainment’s John Ferriter. Project has been shepherded by Morgan’s Ferret Prods. banner.
“Imagine an industry where every single opponent worked in the same street, competing with each other by day – drinking, brawling, fornicating, nightclubbing and cocaine-snorting with each other by night. A street full of the most ruthless and amoral people in the world existed, and it was called Fleet Street,” said Morgan. “In the early ’70s, it became the breeding ground for modern popular journalism, as foreign media tycoons stomped over the British establishment to re-define ‘news,’ suddenly exposing the rich, powerful and famous in spectacular front-page scoops. It was the dawn of the celebrity era, in all its gruesome detail – a revolution that changed pop culture, and the relationship between the press and politicians, royals, and stars. Fleet Street in the ’70s was a hotbed of scoops, shagging, flairs and devastating world that was also unbelievably exciting.Project is still in the early stages of development.
Vix, thanks for posting. and yet ANOTHER series in the works? Awesome. I get STARZ so I will be looking forward to watching Fleet! I watched Anger Management last night after not watching it for a while. The first show had Brian Austin Green guest starring and the second one has Lee Ann Rimes. I think the show has found its mojo. I like it better than when it first came out. The characters are building good chemistry.
