Divergent tracking at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes is one of the lowest reviewed movies around and might be the lowest to launch a franchise. That said - let's take a look at films that rated even lower by critics on Rotten Tomatoes: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (13% Rotten Tomatoes)- produced on a budget of 145M had worldwide revenue of 401M; and The Last Airbender (6% Rotten Tomatoes) - produced on a budget of 150M had worldwide revenue of 319M.
The bottom line here is there are films that do well at the box office despite the reviews. Will Divergent be one of these? We'll all know the answer in a few days. Hopefully we enjoy the movie more than the critics.

    • Critics can go suck a donkey. Divergent is formulaic, targeted for YA audience, sexy stars, and has a strong book following with teens. What more can you ask for? Who the hell do they think goes to movies nowadays? 65mil to 80mil at least. Check Twitter. It's trending.

    • My 12 year old daughter and her friends, along their families will be seeing this movie this weekend. (myself included). No mention was made about the reviews by her friends or their parents.. If Divergent received great reviews it could do Hunger Games numbers, but the young book readers who can't wait to see the story brought to life. The reviews are important to people unfamiliar with the story who are looking to go out and see a good movie.

    • So here is my take. I am very disappointed by the bad reviews and I do think that will keep the totals down. Having said that though, I don't think most people will let poor reviews keep them from seeing a movie they wanted to see. Good reviews however, do make people more likely to see a movie they wouldn't have otherwise considered. It could still do Twilight numbers, but without good reviews it will be hard to beat them. Good word of mouth could help give it legs, except that there is some tough competition a couple weeks out.

The last hope is that better reviews could still come. It is now up to 25% with 2 positive and 6 negative vs the 14% of 1 vs 6. I have to imagine that it will have 100+ reviews by the time it opens. The last positive is that the average rating is actually 5.7/10. To put it in perspective Muppets which is 69% fresh only has a rating of 6.8. If you read the actual reviews they aren't that bad and shouldn't keep anyone away.

(I will keep telling myself this while kicking myself for picking up April options last Friday thinking we were going to pop on what I thought would be good reviews).

      • Exactly LGF lowered their risk on the first Divergent and are in it for like $40 mil themselves. Then the second flick when they have a read they take on more risk for a bigger potential payoff. With fanbase and presales alone domestic they may break even out of pocket. As I mentioned in another post the first Twilight had like a 28 RT and the biggest box office Twilight had a 24% RT. As I type we are above those at 33%. The only thing is with these little girl fans we dont have the male lead from Twilight. Maybe the guy from Divergent will work but he is 29 years old. Early reviews are just older hollywood types who like to compare to HG and cant stand young adult stuff or understand why young girls do. Look at the movies they love that win most of the awards like Her or Lewis Davis. I think they made under $10 mil each or something. The only oscar flicks that made money were huge star movies.

      • I have Mar 30's and 34's! Twilight didn't get great reviews either. The key here will be the fan base.

    • Maybe this will help. Just took this off RottenTomatoes site. Opening March 21 "Jodorowsky's Dune" 100% critics rating and 84% audience rating with 2,282 user response. "Divergent" 25% critic rating (just picked up another fresh) and 97% audience rating with 36,719 user response. Which one of these will make more money?

      Sentiment: Hold
