Went to the 8 PM show. It appeared TMNT and Guardians were drawing the bigger crowds. I enjoyed the movie. Antonio Banderas was pretty funny and the exchanges between Stallone, Statham and Snipes were decent. Unless the crowds get bigger we may come up short of 20M this weekend. The preview of Mortdecai with Johnny Depp drew a lot of laughs.
Millennium/Lionsgates’ Expendables 3 is opening lower than any previous of its installments on a Friday night with an expected take of only $6M (or a tad less) — that’s a 40% decline from Expendables 2′s Friday opening and about a 54% decline from the first Expendables Friday. This third installment, which went all PG-13 on its fans, is likely to only bring in $16M+ for the three-day weekend; let’s hope it gets a shot in the arm from its international rollout as this is one tired franchise in the U.S. The word tanking comes to mind. Not sure how much of its total gross is impacted by the 5M or so illegal downloads but it might really affect the international gross. The good news, if there is any, is that it received an overall A- from its core audience.
Friday AM Update: The Expendables 3 earned an estimated $875,000 from Thursday night shows beginning at 7 p.m. In comparison, the first Expendables grossed $870,000, while The Expendables 2 took in $685,000. In both of those earlier cases, though, showings didn't begin until midnight.
A better comparison might be last week's Into The Storm, which took in $800,000 from late Thursday shows. That went on to earn $17.3 million in its opening weekend; a tally closer to $20 million seems like a likely outcome for The Expendables 3.
Forecast: The Expendables 3 storms in to theaters this weekend, though this gang of geriatric action stars will probably lose out to a bunch of teenage turtles.
Joe overseas may still keep this property alive for us and actually beat the last installments take there. Wouldnt be surprised if they make another one it opens overseas before north America. The good news is starting in two weeks the film slate we have running into next spring should over perform. It looks to me like we have a real visible sweet spot on all fronts for LGF running for three months starting last week of this month or as soon as next week with a little news. Lets all just hope Russia doesnt kill the party.
John - I actually liked the 3rd film more than the first 2. I thought Rousey and Lutz did well in their roles and provided a base of support for the continuation of the series. If it bombs in China we will know the impact of the piracy. I'm taking the kids to see it tomorrow.
