    • Maryland has invested $500,000 in Cytomedix Inc., a regenerative medicine company in Gaithersburg.

The investment was made through the state's Maryland Venture Fund and InvestMaryland program. The state said the money is part of a $27.5 million fundraising round by Cytomedix (OTC: CMXI) that will result in the company adding 13 new employees to its current staff of 55.

InvestMaryland is a program in which the state raised $84 million through a tax credit auction and is now investing the money in early stage companies.

Two-thirds of the funding — $56 million — is being managed by private venture firms that will invest the funds and, if successful, return 100 percent of the principal and 80 percent of the profits to the state’s general fund. Maryland has already invested $25 million in three local firms — $12 million to Grotech Ventures; $8 million to New Atlantic Ventures and $5 million to Kinetic Ventures.

Last week the state announced announced a $300,000 investment in Adlyfe, a Rockville diagnostic test developer, as part of InvestMaryland.
