    Angie's List....Yelp....etc

i have an LLP garage door company in Edmonds, Wa along with my son and i would like to thank Angie's List for their advertising. We do around 600 jobs a year, give or take. i've never looked at our reviews, but through customers, i've been told we have over 40 reports with 40 "A" grades. Another customer said we have over 100 reports. A customer told me the other day we have five 5-star reports on Yelp. i've never paid for these services, but i do get calls every other month or so to increase the exposure and pay a few $$$$.

Phone book advertising is not dead yet. Quite a few years ago, the only advertising change i made was with a smaller phone company in north Snohomish County that has since been bought out by Yellow Book. My job count went from 460 to 660 in one year.

The contractor business is full of rip-off artists. i recently did a service call for a young 20 something black girl who was a sweetheart. A couple months earlier, she had a full-page ad company come out and did a double torsion spring change on her 16' door. They shafted her for 700 bucks and they didn't even tune up the door. i charge 145 bucks for the same spring change. She called me because both cables had come off the door. i've got too many nightmare stories about what's happening out there, whether it's plumbing, electircal or any other service and that's why companies like Angie's List, Yelp and others are so important to consumers....

And yet people are pumping this scam while insiders are checking out......borderline criminal, imo!

    • Good for you. The stock blows, however.

    • An Angie's List sales rep called a couple months ago and i did ask what the increased advertising rate was and i think he said 350 bucks a month, which is way over my budget. i also asked him the rating of the rip-off garage door company, that i mentioned in the last message. He replied that it had a favorable rating. i don't remember what it was, but i did tell him about this company and their tactics, but he said he couldn't do anything about it. It would be been nice if he did his homework on some of these rip-off companies.

      Another example of many:
We did a spring change for a very nice older lady of 80 years. She had a leak under her sink and called a plumber that she thought was located near her home in Mill Creek. The guy came out from West Seattle and charged her 500 bucks. She showed me the part replaced, which was a 16" flexible water line and told me he was there for 30 minutes. He charged her 550 bucks and she was able to talk him down to 500. "What you do to the least of MINE , you do to ME"....
