(WPRI) -- A local contractor was hired by several Rhode Island homeowners because of his rave customer reviews, but many are now saying that he walked off the job.
In less than three months, the Contractor's Registration Board tells us that Richard Froais has racked up ten complaints, totaling close to $80,000 in claims. We've learned that he's no longer responding to homeowners' calls.
One East Providence resident says she didn't have a working kitchen for weeks.
"I can't believe he would take our money and leave the house in such a mess," said Susan O'Sullivan.
The Hobbs family, from Lincoln, tell us they've been living without a shower.
"We were not able to use the tub," said Walter Hobbs. "It went for 50 days and I finally said 'forget it'."
Both of those homeowners hired Richard Froais, owner of NE Renovations, LLC, located in Warren. They say they hired him based on rave reviews they found on the website "Angie's List".
After hiring Froais and paying him, in some cases thousands of dollars, the homeowners claim the chase was on to get him to finish the job. In cases such as the O'Sullivans and the Hobbses, he never did.
There are currently ten complaints filed against Froais with the contractor's registration board, claiming things such as:
"Contractor never obtained building permits."
"Contractor walked off the job."
"I gave him a second check and he never came back."
At a recent board hearing to discuss his registration status, Froais was a no-show, so the board revoked his registration.
"Most of the deposits he's taken are substantial, and the work that he's done is not even close to what the money has been paid off on," said George Whalen, director of the RI Contractor's Registration Board.
