Why wouldn't they? They are not so interested in hardcore totalitarianism, or military engagement. They are interested in economic domination.
If they green-lighted South Korea, and did not backstop North Korea, then a war begun by North Korea would be another economic quagmire for the US. We would squander another $1 trillion on GI's and bullets.
But the GI's will dress much more snappy now, and when they march, they'll use jazz hands. (Sorry, I couldn't resist).
A united Korea can play both US and China against each other for it's own gain. N and S Koreans hate the Americans, especially their youth. S Koreans university students are choosing to learn mandarin over english. It may not be as much a positive as the American think ... A united korea.
