How to distinguish pure EPA pharmaceutical grade capsules from Vascepa pharmaceutical grade fish oil capsules

    What is the difference?

If you are confused as to why Vascepa EPA capsules are not the same as current available pharmaceutical grade pure EPA capsules, read on!

Do not be fooled. I have read about these current pharmaceutical grade pure EPA products. I found and copied the first three pure EPA (no DHA) capsule products I found that meet the same strict GMP manufacturing guidelines as Vascepa but there is a difference!

The difference is that none of these pure EPA products is available in 4 capsule daily doses like Vascepa is.

They are present in various sized capsules which may force you to take more than 4 capsules per day.

Since convenience of taking daily capsules is a concern to many, then see which EPA product satisfies our desire for taking just 4 capsules per day.

Here I cut and pasted straight from their web pages. I calculated the capsule count to show how many more it takes to reach Vascepa doses. I had to do the calculations because they do not want to advertise how many capsules they require to equal Vascepa.

    *E-EPA 90* 4 gm pure EPA (no DHA) = 8 capsules

E-EPA 90 is the purest ethyl-EPA concentrate available without prescription.
Extracted from marine anchovy oil and ultra-purified using molecular distillation, E-EPA 90 provides 1000 mg EPA with just two easy-to-swallow capsules daily.

All efforts have been taken at every level of the manufacturing process to ensure that the ingredients in our premium products are of the highest quality. We are careful to source ingredients from reputable and full-accredited suppliers. The origin and condition of the raw oils, even before they undergo the rigorous purification process, is of paramount importance. Each of the products is GMP-accredited and manufactured under pharmaceutical control, thereby minimising the presence of dioxins, PCBs and heavy metal toxins.

"Fish oil supplements are not Vascepa. Vascepa or Icosapent Ethyl is derived from fish oil in a process that concentrates, purifies, and then alters it through a chemical process to create a pro-drug.

Fish oil EPA is an ester, OH-C=O; it's ingested into the body some of which get absorbed into the blood stream as EPA and some of it get digested and broken down into a smaller fatty non active FA chain. Lovaza contains purify fish oil EPA and DHA along with several other Omega acid ethyl esters.

Vascepa or Icosapent ethyl is a pro-drug derived from fish oil. (Lovaza is fish oil) Icosapent Ethyl has a covalently bonded ethyl group H3C-CH- bonded to the Ester group. This is not a salt, this is not an ester group (it's an Ethyl), and the bond is covalent. According to the definition of a new active moiety by the FDA, it fits the bill. The Icosapent Ethyl is ingested and ACTIVATED inside the body by Pancreatic Lipase, to the active form absorbed by the body. If you take 4 grams of pure 99% EPA you will not get the same blood levels of EPA if you ingest the Icosapent Ethyl / Vascepa because most of the "pure EPA" will be destroyed in your stomach and upper intestines.

Any study the say's "fish oil" doesn't relate to Vascepa at all.

Vascepa is a pro-drug of EPA, and a NCE."

      • I am so sick of people putting down Vascepa for being an Ethyl Ester rather than free form fatty acid. Sure triglycerides are good and all, but our body can deal with Ethyl Esters like Vascepa also. Maybe not as efficiently, but our body can sort through ethyl esters like Vascepa and Lovaza. Hell, the fda approved them so they can't be all that bad.

    • Vascepa is prescription grade and regulated by the FDA, not the GMP whatever that is

    • This is cray cray! I'm seeing more and more true EPA in OTC form. All of a sudden it's not as rarified as we thought. This thing could be in for a SOMX type ending. The similarities are building week by week! The reasons it looks like SOMX are starting to build. Those of you who were there know what I'm saying.
How about a PR for the new Tier ll certification today? What? Cat got your tongue? You say you're in a fight for your share holder's value but can't lift your arms to defend yourself? Another blackout. This is every week! Blackout better mean buy out! Maybe you don't sleep well. Waking up in the middle of the night? Get a script for Silenor. Patented until 2020. Stock is worth 65 cents but hey- we'll wait I guess. 1+ dollar per share is the 3X reverse split to keep it listed. Those of us who got killed there know what smoke and mirrors are! These AMRN boys better get their game up, ONE false move and you'll wish it was 5 bucks. This PPS is without any bad news. This is time for these guys to make their move damn it! They spend any more time in the limelight they'll be beef jerky! Move it!

If these items are as close to Vascepa in composition, then the only issue may very well be price.
How much does an equivalent amount of these capsules cost versus Vascepa ?

      • All three of these pure EPA products fails the 4 capsule per day rule.

Some have argued that having smaller amounts of EPA in smaller capsules allows you to vary your dosage to a very specific level. Options .5gm, 1.5gm, 2gm, 2.5gm, 3gm, 3.5gm, 4gm, etc. Some even say it is easier to swallow a smaller .5gm capsule than a far larger 1gm capsule.

But who wants to keep track of so many capsules? I would rather take one gigantic capsule than two or three smaller ones.

The much larger capsule size of Vascepa will limit us to very strict 1gm, 2gm, 3gm, 4gm doses, but because they are larger capsules, we gain the convenience of taking just 4 capsules per day.

Doctors' prescription orders will be easier to follow. Some people have a hard time swallowing the much larger sized capsules, but they are few and far between. In addition, I would argue that any struggle to swallow 1 really large capsule is worth not having to swallow 2 or more smaller capsules per dose. Convenience is a huge concern for health conscience people. If I have to take 8 capsules per day, then forget it.

As the debate rages on, remember if you can get the same pharmaceutical grade pure EPA from facilities that all meet the exact same GMP standards, I want the big capsules so I only have to take 4 every single day. It is too hard to remember more than 4 even if those other capsules are less expensive. If you can't remember to take them, what good is saving money? Take the more expensive, much larger Vascepa capsules and forget about it.

        Good luck and God bless!
