My Doctor's advise 3 months ago

I don't pay too much attention to my cholesterol for some egoistic reason that I control it via exercise.
2 months ago he recommended I take Crestor and I refused as usual. I asked him about Vascepa and he said he hadn't heard about it (Then on providing some background he said it's a fish oil and recommended I take Crestor). So when I go for check up next month and let's say my numbers aren't great, Can I tell him to prescribe me Vascepa?

    • Don't you listen to your doctor? Crestor is the very best drug you can take for cholesterol. Vascepa is not used for cholesterol. When your told you need open heary surgery you'll know who to blame.

    • Yes you should ask him to prescribe Vascepa. If he doesn't I would switch doctors. He isn't reviewing the studies. My friend requested Vascepa rather than statins and got Vascepa. In fact his Doctor thanked him for Vascepa to his attention.

    • How is it even possible that you don't know the difference between Cholesterol levels and Triglycerides levels?

Statins reduce your cholesterol levels. EPA lowers triglycerides.

Lower cholesterol levels have been shown to improve cv events.
Lower triglyceride levels have not been shown to improve cv events.

This means lowering triglyceride levels might not do anything except lower your triglyceride levels. In this case, you will be s o l.

If your doctor thought that Omega 3's would help, he would instruct you to take them. He doesn't think they will help you.

All omega 3 options can be taken with a statin. People have been doing this for many many years.

The stupidity in this thread astounds me.

It depends on your blood test ...your lipid panel .
If your LDL cholesterol is over 200 ...ignore everyone here and do as your doctor advised ...take Crestor .
Crestor has the proven clinical benefit ...Jupiter trial ... to reduce your risk of a heart attack ...which I'm sure is preferable to the muscle cramping you may experience on Crestor

I am on max dose Crestor
If your LDL is lower , and you have no family history of heart disease and can exercise , eat wild salmon twice a week ,reduce red meat , give up proceessed meats , and avoid high cholesterol foods , give up smoking ( if you smoke ) , lower you blood pressure and have a reasonable blood sugar level .....then by all means try Vascepa instead

    • First off your Chol and Tryg levels are 2 diff things. This comes down to where your Trig levels are. If your Trig levels fall btwn 200-499 mgs you may have to wait for Anchor approval to take V. However, unlike any other Trig drug you will be able to take Crestor and Vascepa together. '
And with that... WELCOME TO the WORLD OF AMRN and Combo-Statin mkt for Vascepa..

      • Your TG/HDL ratio is more of a CHD indicator than total Chol. Under 2 is good, under 1 is ideal! Although I have a 206 Total Chol., I have a 45 TG and a 80 HDL . A ratio of .56 is indicative of a healthy Mediterranean diet and a lifetime of exercise (54yrs old). I had one quack want to put me on Lipitor because my Totl Chol was 200. I told him I would stop exercising to lower my HDLs and make him happy that I would then be under 200. I switched Quacks. My new Doctor gave me a script for Vascepa off labe for the anti inflammatory effect.......maybe I'll lower my LDL a little (116) in the process.

        Sentiment: Buy

    • Ask for Vascepa again because statins have other side effects outside of elevated liver enzymes. I take generic Lipitor and the muscle aches and that hot pain upon exercise is annoying and is a side effect. Some people experience weight gain. I had to ask my cardiologist to prescribe Vascepa in addition to the statin. I added Vascepa thinking it could ease the muscle pain and so far a month into it I have decreased the muscle cramps and I am back in the gym lifting weights. It's not all gone but it no longer limits my physical activity. In case anyone is wondering, I was tested for the muscle wasting side effect of statins and tested just fine. It causes cramping and aches in some people.

      Sentiment: Hold

    • Your numbers will probably be improved but you're taking a toxic med that can harm you. Better to take Vascepa first for free then check labs
