Businessweekk had an article titled "Retail Reckoning" (12/10/01 issue).
Mentioned Columbus area and Polaris as an example of an area that has added a lot of sq ftge of shopping space. It is an excellent but scary article about the potential for the other shoe dropping in terms of retail failures next year.
Everyone should try to get ahold of the article for your files.
The most devastating chart in the article showed how retailers have increased space to keep up with consumers but on the margin do not appear to be getting the profit margins to have justified expansion.
Granted, this is a composite of many retailers and we have no way of knowing how this will impact GRT. GRT at last cc felt that the worst of the retail bankruptcies were behind them in the near term. I will b listening very closely to the FEB 02 cc regarding EOY and update on Polaris and the status of GRT retailers very closely.
