    Underperforming

This one is really underperforming other global funds this year, huh? I own this in my 401K and am reviewing my holdings. The 5 year performance is good though....

    • Regarding dividends ... They're great, but at the same time, the value of the fund drops the equivalent of the dividend.

Now, can someone tell me how we LOST 14.5% last WEEK? What happened

    • Yes, but make sure it is in a nontaxable IRA, so those long term capgains and dividends are not taxed... They typically do this toward the end of the year.

      Good Luck... Happy Thanksgiving, too.

      Blessings,

    • "Yep, yep, yep... I agree. Fantastic value fund... pays nice dividend at the end of each year as well."

In that regard, does it make sense to move dollars from funds not paying dividends into funds that do...at least temporarily through dividend paying season? I'm somewhat a novice with mutual funds.

Let's put things in perspective: at the same date last year, SGENX was up 11.4% and closed the year at 20.5%, this year it is at 8.4% but still has potential to close noticeably higher.
In any case, this is value investing: when everyone was screaming at Eveillard to jump on the 1999 high-tech bandwagon, he refused and got criticized for not getting the fund to earn more for its clients, however in the end, SGENX was one of the very rare funds to not lose a penny when the bubble bursted in 2000, 2001 an 2002.

    • Underperforming is an understatement. The past
4 months this pig has gone about 1.5% . You can
do better than this in a guaranteed income fund.

There is no obvious reason (except holding J&J)
that the returns are so poor for this fund. Maybe
it's a good thing some of the managers left or are
being replaced .... I just hope they don't show up
in any of my other holdings if SGENX recent performance
is all they can show for.
