    Earth is dangerously warming

Earth is dangerously warming - and we are causing it

by Tony Magliano | Oct. 28, 2013 Making a Difference
I usually write a column on global warming during the height of summer heat. It's harder for people to deny global warming when they're sweating.

But the highly authoritative United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's recent report, "Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis," has important warnings for us to seriously consider now.

The report, authored by 259 scientists and editors from 39 countries, declares: "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased."

According to the report, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have increased to levels unprecedented in over the last 800,000 years. Concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide has increased by 40 percent since pre-industrial times primarily because of fossil fuel emissions.

As a result, the earth is warming, causing major ice melts. During the last two decades, Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have continued to lose mass, and glaciers throughout the world are shrinking. Furthermore, Arctic sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere continues to decrease.

    • Matt Ridley:
"It is significant because it points to the very real possibility that, over the next several generations, the overall effect of climate change will be positive for humankind and the planet.--

Warming of up to 1.2 degrees Celsius over the next 70 years (0.8 degrees have already occurred), most of which is predicted to happen in cold areas in winter and at night, would extend the range of farming further north, improve crop yields, slightly increase rainfall (especially in arid areas), enhance forest growth and cut winter deaths (which far exceed summer deaths in most places). Increased carbon dioxide levels also have caused and will continue to cause an increase in the growth rates of crops and the greening of the Earth—because plants grow faster and need less water when carbon dioxide concentrations are higher.

Up to two degrees of warming, these benefits will generally outweigh the harmful effects, such as more extreme weather or rising sea levels, which even the IPCC concedes will be only about 1 to 3 feet during this period. "

    • ROFL! Red, of all people, posting an article on global warming written by the same guy who…'In his challenging keynote address “Advancing the Kingdom of God in the 21st Century,” Tony clearly explains how prayerful reflection upon the ancient teachings of the Gospel and the modern principles of Catholic social teaching can effectively guide a consistent, logical and life-affirming approach to the moral issues – everything from abortion to war – facing humanity in the 21st century.'

      Thanks red, thanks for this…

Red, like Tony Magliano…true believers, just trying to save us...

    • The anti-science, Koch minions are going to start whining again. Why do these minions fly into a fit of rage over something they know nothing about? Why do they insist that NASA, NOAA, and 98% of all qualified scientists are lying? The minions have no idea why they act the way they do, that is why they are minions.

      • Why mess around, guys? Bob says it all for you:

"We could have less than 17 years to live - thanks to climate change, Bob Geldof has warned.
The 61-year-old Live Aid founder told young people at a conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, that there will be ‘a mass extinction event’ and admitted his generation had let down today’s youth"

      • levy and red,
Just in case you haven't noticed, NOAA, NASA and many other august institutions have been quietly ratcheting down their earlier alarmism prognostications. Lowering the expected temperature rises, reducing the CO2 forcings, admitting that cyclonic activity is not rising, admitting they didn't predict the pause in temperatures, admitting the sun has a greater role than they once thought, that sea levels won't rise as much as feared, that they don't have a handle on cosmic rays and cloud formation, that they don't exactly know why Antarctic ice reached a record extent and why Artic ice grew 50% this year, that corals really can adapt to higher ocean temperatures, that the 'missing heat' is not being found, etc., etc..
The actual weather data is working against them and their earlier wild predictions. They are having to keep face while slowly reducing the future claims. They couldn't possibly do this in one big adjustment as they would look like even greater error mongers than they are. They know where their money comes from and don't want to jeopardize that in any way.

You need to keep up with the latest data published and not merely hang your hat on crazy predictions from two decades ago...

The world is not going to end as we know it...from climate changes anyway...

      • These anti-science guys wouldn't believe it if Ronald Reagan and Jesus both, in that order, came back and told them. I just like to post this stuff to get their wacky reactions so everyone will know they are nuts.

    • Earth is dangerously warming - only in Red's world...

IPCC Fails To Come Clean Over Global Temperature Standstill
IPCC’s Diversion Tactics Criticized The Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) is criticizing the IPCC for its deliberate attempt to obscure the reality of an ongoing temperature standstill and its failure to come clean about the failure of its models.

The IPCC has decided to discount the global warming standstill since 1997 as irrelevant and has deleted from its final document its original acknowledgement (in its 7 June draft) that climate models have failed to ’reproduce the observed reduction in surface warming trend over the last 10-15 years.’

And now it's global COOLING! Return of Arctic ice cap as it grows by 29% in a year
"A chilly Arctic summer has left 533,000 more square miles of ocean covered with ice than at the same time last year – an increase of 29 per cent. The rebound from 2012’s record low comes six years after the BBC reported that global warming would leave the Arctic ice-free in summer by 2013. Instead, days before the annual autumn re-freeze is due to begin, an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia’s northern shores"

NASA Announces New Record Growth Of Antarctic Sea Ice Extent
"Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world. ..the ice extent reached 19.51 million square kilometers, according to data posted on the National Snow and Ice Data Center Web site. That number bested record high levels set earlier this month and in 2012 (of 19.48 million square kilometers). Records date back to October 1978."

    • Tony Magliano... Yet another alarmist completely swayed by emotion and relying on the IPCC to give him the 'truth'. The latest IPCC report is filled with errors and mis-statements and is being debunked every day. The climate models of the IPCC are ridiculously wrong and the IPCC actually claims they don't know why. (Noted atmospheric physicists claim they know why...the CO2 forcing parameter is wayyy too large.) Not a single model predicted the current 20 year pause in temperature rise and not a single one is predicting a cooldown despite the fact that many leading experts are predicting one for the next 20+ years.
Tony, like so many other alarmists, deny that any of this might be related to the fact that we began exiting a mini ice age in 1850 that lasted almost 300 years previously. So what did they think would happen to ocean temps, air temps, ice mass and glaciers as we warm back to something more normal?
Thank goodness for the extra CO2 in a mostly CO2 starved atmosphere! Plants are growing much more rapidly and food is being produced much more rapidly. Far fewer deaths from excess heat are recorded than deaths from excess cold. Lets hope the sun going 'quiet' isn' t foretelling another cool temperature regime as is being debated right now...
