I recently took a small starter position in SO.--I thought there might be some useful information on the message board concerning the Southern Company--UNFORTUNATELY I found a board cluttered with political drivel, all of which has no bearing on this company. It appears that most if not all of the meaningless hateful comments come from a FEW haters and does NOT represent the feeling of the majority of the board, which is fortunate. I suggest that the serious posters put the "haters" on "ignore. That seems to be the only way to avoid the clutter on this board.--GL2A
I agree. I come to the board to discuss directly pertinent info and ideas about Southern Company. Always happy to welcome someone who wants to discuss this stock. Long on SO, short on political crybabies and spammers. Looking forward to making good profits through good conversation and idea sharing. Go Southern, Go Georgia Power!
I don't think it's SO specific. All my utes are down this week. I think investors may be pulling their money out of the market, and that's affecting everything. I could be wrong. Actually SO has had a good run and I'm still up with it.
I completely agree... the political diatribes on here are total partisan hogwash and real time wasters. That being said, I've been independently investing for over 15 years now, and I've been on stock message boards for almost precisely the same amount of time. Over the years, I've found that independent research trumps nearly any advice I've ever gotten off a message board. I'm probably just stating the obvious, but thought I might save you some time :^)
Every once in a while there will be a reasonable/illuminating discussion, though, and that's why I'm still here! The best advice I can give you: no one really knows anything for sure... it's all just calculated risk. Even the 'safest' risk (and some people would say Southern is 'safe risk') is still risk, by definition.
Historically, every 4 quarters SO has increased dividends about $0.18 per share. According to this pattern, they should increasing to $0.491 this year. their annual pattern in the past few years has been $0.42 to 0.438 to 0.455 to 0.473.
Their new Coal Gassification plant in Kemper County, Mississippi is being financed with approved ADVANCE utility price increases so this capital expenditure should allow them to increase dividends again (my opinion)
Like any intel, it's never all in one place (and you wouldn't want it to be to keep from being tainted or biased and subject to manipulation). Also intel is like fishing.....no telling how often, how big the catch will be or its quality. Just make the best of what you can pick up.
Being in SO's service area (Atlanta) I hear a good bit about rate changes and issues re: new nukes and conversion to/building gas fired plants.
Right now my sense is that SO is a good place to be.
Lucky you are correct.--Let's have more comment on SO.
As I stated, I have only a small "starter" position in SO. I note that SO has consistently raised the dividend. I will add to SO but not just yet. IMHO SO probably will decline a few points which will make it more attractive and a safer bet. I could be wrong (I have been so before) but I believe patience will be rewarded.
friendly: "I will add to SO but not just yet."
I agree. I have suspended contributions to my 2-year-old dividend reinvestment plan. My average basis is a shade under $36. If price keep rising, well zippitty-doo-dah; I'll be happy with the gain on my existing, dividend- enriched investment. If prices pull back into the $30's, SO will be seeing my $100/month again.
I agree with the poster who sees this as a utility (not SO) issue. My 2 other ute holdings seem a little rich too.
I came onto SO to read some messages about SO and was reminded why I haven't been on a message board for a while. Anytime somebody mentions Obama they are deemed a "hater". The writers then proceed to use the word "hate" over and over. Makes me think where "hate" really lies.
JIM WORKS:---You are correct---Most posters on this board "hate" posts which are tainted by the political position of the poster. I really like to use the word "dislike" rather than "haters"---However, it would be nice if the posters would keep their politics to themselves and we could juist discuss the relative merits of SO.
