      RIDGE, Ill., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Nanophase
Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: NANX - news), a leader in
      engineering advanced materials using nanocrystalline
compounds, today announced that it had received notice that
the Japanese Patent Office has granted its patent
application entitled ``METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MAKING
NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS.'' According to Dr. D. J. Freed, vice
president of business development, ``The grant of this
patent in Japan is a key milestone in protecting
Nanophase's technology on a global basis and supports our

      Nanophase Gains Additional Patents

      BURR RIDGE, Ill.,
      Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nanophase Technologies
Corporation (Nasdaq: NANX - news), a leader in nanomaterials
and nanoengineered products, today announced that a
patent related to surface modification of
nanocrystalline materials was issued on November 30, 1999 as U.S.
Patent No. 5,993,967. The Company also stated that it
had received notice from the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office of the allowance of an additional patent
application in this field. Additional applications in this
series have also been filed in Europe and
      Asia.

Dr. Richard Brotzman, vice president of research and
an inventor of the patented technology, said, ``The
ability to tailor the surfaces of Nanophase's particles
improves the electronic, optical and chemical performance
and enables Nanophase to provide value-added
solutions to our customers, particularly for applications
      in conductive, abrasion-resistant and advanced
optical coatings. These patents and applications are an
integral part of Nanophase's plans to protect its
technology related to surface modification of
      nanoparticles.''

``We are quite pleased that the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office has recognized the uniqueness and value of
these inventions,'' said Dr. D.J. Freed, Nanophase's

demonstrates the breadth of our nanomaterials technology. The
products that these inventions allow us to create are the
fundamental building blocks of the Company's NanoShield(TM)
product lines of dispersed nanocrystalline materials and
      nanoparticulate coatings.''

    • Congradulations to the longs. Now, a reality
      check.

First, President Clinton's recent announcement should
come as no surprise to readers of this board. Remember
      message 701
      (http://messages.yahoo.com/bbs?action=m&board=8729282&tid=nanx&sid=8729282&mid=70
      1
) (to which this message replies)? It was mentioned
on the first link on the page. If you really want to
know what his announcement was about, go back and read
the OTHER links on the page.

      Second, for those
not well-versed with the Federal budget process, all
that's happened is that Clinton said that he will ASK
Congress for more money, for the next fiscal year
(starting next October). There is not a good correlation
between Clinton's pet projects and what the Republican
Congress actually decides to do -- especially in an
election year when tax cuts and restraining budget growth
are going to be front-line issues.

      Third,
congratulations again if you bought-in at 2 or less. However,
lest we forget, NANX had its IPO just over 2 years
ago, at 12 (IIRC). It fell to 2 because it wasn't
actually selling very much of anything to anybody. It
      still isn't.

      So, to the extent that
nanotechnolgy is the flavor-of-the-month, NANX may do well.
However, this story is still going to be driven by
applications and sales, which aren't growing as quickly as the
      new participants on this board.

    • and thanks for the links. The last was especially
interesting about the Japanese company VMC.

      "VMC is in
many ways similar to Nanophase Technologies
Corporation in the United States. They both use the principle
      of
gas-phase condensation for particle generation. Both are
market-driven companies that try to break into various new
      markets.
Thus, their targeted markets, as shown in Table D.1,
are very similar. At the present time, the UFP
      revenue for VMC is about
      $4 million. Dr. Hayashi
indicated that he hopes to increase the UFP business in VMC
to about $10 million in two or
      three
      years."

They appear to have been at this a long time (late
seventies, early eighties) and expect $10MM in sales in a
few years. Hope we see a better future.
