This will strike fear in the hearts of Lux Italy and the corporate offices. They hate unions. They hate a strong, organized workforce - and like us scared and scattered. Start inviting your local retail union workers in. Don't fear retribution - if they hassle or fire you - you can sue for retaliation. You will ALWAYS win that case. It's easy money - so don't worry about that.
We need to protect our work hours - salaries - benefits. They have already slashed staff and work force, and hours - spiffs - and benefits are next. Stand up. Organize. We are playing into their hands by being disorganized.
It's about profit and not people. People who talk about Dave Brown and Cliff Bartowe were correct. Kerry and the rest of the people at the headquarters only care about profit - not people.
I was a former PLC employee back to the days of US Shoe and went through the LUX buyout. I saw what LUX did to the "Core Values" that everyone (including Dave Brown) lived by. Many of you may or may not remember having to recite the core values to get your paycheck. After LUX, we experienced the same things you're bringing to the table today; reduced hours, bare-bones staff, 2 managers to cover 70+ hours a week.
We discussed Unionization as well for Licensed Opticians when LUX was lobbying to have state Optical licensing abolished throughout the US. Yes we had lousy RDO's and DFO's, and likewise that really don't care and have no idea what goes on in the real world. Do yourselves a favor for the sake of your health and well being; find another job. Yes it's tough, but it can be done; you will be much better off for it. Stop letting them control your lives and screw with your sanity. I left the optical field with my licenses and never practiced opticianry again. It was the best move I ever made.
LUX is the 800 pound gorilla of the optical industry. If your decision to leave was right for you GREAT, but some of us want to stay with our profession.
As long as it keeps it's current policy of exploitation, the turnover will indicate a lot of people agree with you.
The cost of training, returns, remakes and lab material losses will be the price you pay. OR you could try keeping and appreciating the people you've got in the stores.
About half of the stimulus package will be going to the labor unions. I don't know how this will affect our increasingly socialistic USA.
The last thing this company needs is more internal unrest. The auto industry is a prime example of unionization making it impossible to compete. Retail is in a cut-throat mode right now and payroll is the only cost that can be controlled. Eyeglasses are a necessity, and pretty much out-source proof.Our stock has been downgraded to hold. Unionization talk could be the death of a solid company in these questionable times.
We need management that would care about giving a 40-hour week to hourly employees. The turnover will remain terrible until they respect us. It would be hard to unionize unless we talk to local unions about our abuse and get advice from them. The unions might want to do commercials to get disgruntled employees from all the brands.
It would be easier to start making copies of our sales to have them account for the way they give commissions. Start making a copy of every sale. We don’t get lucid answers when we pursue what we’ve earned. When people could prove that there is no way we are getting what they owe us, at least we can do a class action. Have you ever seen LUX try to make it easy to track when commissions are paid for each sale?
If this alone was addressed, I think it would be worth it.
1. Unions were originaly organized to help protect workers from abuse, intimidation and poor work or pay conditions.
2.During most of my tenure at Lux, I felt that my pay was adequate to above average. I originally had an RDO who created a great/team environment. Our region soared. Then I got a new RDO...a career gal looking to make her way to the top. She wasn't good to start with, but seemed nice enough. No business sense, minimal work ethic, absolutely no follow thru, no optical experience, but great schmoozing skills. Our region was mediocre, made it to average and hung there. This doesn't bode well for a climb up the corporate ladder.
3.LUX started to change and hour cuts were deeper every year, spiffs changed every year for the worst, a store that once had three retail and three lab even during slow times soon had one in each place. Because we depended on each other and were in the trenches together, we helped each other. Good thing because we received no support from up above. It is hard to see people get very low compensation and run all day long like a hamster in a wheel. We tried to discus this with the RDO.
4.We contacted HR and presented everything, we were promised a safe environment. Guess what the next review stated: "Negative, unwilling to change, not a team player" all of which then result in a smaller or no raise. The repercussins just kept on coming. 5.(Please read the thread on FEARMONGERING)
6.We didn't want less work. We didn't expect too much. We just wanted fair pay for a fulltime job. Why give us the title of full time if we are supposed to work 38 hours during Jan thru March. Then give us 3 or more weeks of vacation that we had to hoard to pad our pay from April thru December. There was no possible way to take a paid vacation, because you would not be able to eat during the lean months. We didn't need poor performers protected at the expense of other associates. WE JUST WANTED A BOSS WHO DID HER JOB, SO WE COULD DO OUR JOB AND THEN A COMPANY WHO WOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND HAVE THE SAME RULES FOR EVERYONE.
7.It is really difficult to perform well when you don't get inventory dates, don't know your goals for contests, don't know when or where the next meeting or training will be held and see all the regional supervisors above you continue to succeed when they don't do their job. We had one who could not use a laptop and would not take a class to learn how.
8. Vice presidents have been known to pass along "urban legends" to our field teams. Even store associates know the information is just bunk.
9. If a union could organize, corporate would hopefully not be able to treat people poorly,singling them out for retaliation after years of valuable service. At least there would be a sounding board and another set of eyes to watch over things.
Sorry so long, but the examples could come all day long just from the region that I called home!

I guess if you find the time to complain you probably found ways on how to get by with doing as little work as possible.
I have seen this same nonsense said at another company i owned stock in and it went no where, The union didn't go in, no one got fired but then they were held more accountable to the point where the People who were instigating the "Start inviting your local retail union workers in" Quit.
Hey if the job is that Bad resign find something else to do with your life but don't poison the minds of others because you are so miserable.
"how to get by, by doing as little work as possible" what a strange and sarcastic statement. The original purpose of labor unions was to ensure fair compensation for fair labor. We need to unite to get our voices heard. But Labor unions are NOT the answer. Stockholders are heard. Stockholders have a voice in the company. If you are not satisfied with the way Lux is handling internal affairs buy its stock and use that voice to make changes. You may not make a "killing" but you will have access to the ears of those above Cinci.
