    You Should be Scared

Today's the day. The day when people's fondest memories with a department store, people strongest emotional connection with a retail brand, will be replaced with an unwelcomed tacky vanilla attempt at a high-end department store known as Macy's. The department store may not be doing well these days but at least they could count on the goodwill they had built over the years. People gave them more credit than they deserved because it was the place their grandma took them when they were a little girl, where there mom took them to pick out their prom dress, where they signed up for their bridal registry. Now all the goodwill is lost. Do you seriously think people in Chicago who lose the venerable Marshall Field's brand will give Macy's any credit? Do you think Bostonians will even consider going to Macy's after their beloved Filene's is gone. THERE IS NO GOODWILL. Without the goodwill that took over 100 years to build up department stores have been able to survive. WITHOUT IT - they'll die!

The only department store that is building goodwill right now is Nordstrom.

Today's headline: Regional Stores change to Macy's
Tomorrow's headline: Macy's to close 100s of stores do to lackluster holiday sales.
