I'm from western South Dakota and have been silently following KOG board for a couple years now. I'm glad the news is getting out there about the blizzard and the loss of livestock in our area. It's truly a major loss for many ranchers in this area. I have seen said cattle along the roadways and the numbers are staggering. Thanks for posting!!
Is it 100,000 dead cattle or 20,000? USA Today in a report today says 20,000.
South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard and U.S. Sen. John Thune did an aerial assessment Thursday of the blizzard damage and livestock losses. State officials said at least 10,000 to 20,000 head of livestock died, but the estimate will likely rise.
The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association estimates that western South Dakota lost at least 5 percent of its cattle, much of which are raised for slaughter. Nearly a third of the state's 3.7 million cattle and calves reside in the western part of the state.
I just drove across SD yesterday morning. It was rain the whole way until I got into the black hills. I escaped the worst of it since it didn't turn to snow unti the afternoon. There was no snow on the ground across 90 until I got into the higher elevations.
It's not half as bad as the news is making it out to be. The worst part is the power outages. They're a bit slow on getting power back up this time. Probably because of the rain.
