Just seeking suggestions for further research. I think NBG and AT are the best value plays at the moment that I've across. Would like other suggestions for similar stocks (SP at or near 52-week low, improving fundamentals, profitable industry, etc).
don't know if all these meet your criteria, but they are my favorites and all are value plays in their own way:
banks: san, bsbr
mining: anv, mcp (even better buy right now because it just took a huge hit)
biotech: idix, thrx
I also think CHK is still a great value and a great buy after being beaten down for years. if you look at chart and company history you will see just how high this one could go, and it has been steadily gaining since Icahn got involved. could easily double from here imo.
TASR is another one that was beaten down for years and has just begun to take off, which I think could more than double. obviously the best time to have gotten into that one was while it was still under 10, but when you compare it to other "momentum stocks" in the market, this is one that might just be at the beginning of its trajectory and ready to take off.
some people here mentioned AMD, not really a value play in the traditional sense. but I can see the value there. it certainly has huge potential to run with the right catalyst. but it also has the potential to lie there dead for ages. of course that is the risk with all plays where you are betting on a turn around and increasing value - you don't know for sure when the big move will come, and they can sometimes stagnate for a long time.
Interesting picks. Especially your banking picks as I'm starting to look at Brazilian stocks. I may go the easy route and just buy an ETF. A Brazilian infrastructure ETF looks like a good bet over the next 1-3 years given the World Cup and Olympics.
Atlantic Power Corporation. It's been beaten down this year mostly as a result of a sharp dividend cut and ensuing lawsuits. Passage of time, diversified energy projects, and a general rebound for utility stocks should push it higher.
bought AMD today on the drop, 3.58, looks very good, you didnt even mention the fact that china is ending its decade long ban on video game consoles this year, that could be potentially huge for the console business and by proxy amd
AMD book value per share: $0.50, current share price $4.09 ... of course it doesnt take into account a lot of things, but you called it when you said it was a "bet", good luck, may you ride one of those spikes that chart is full of
