Does anyone know whether Rambus has launched an appeal process to revisit their huge loss last November against Micron MU and their even more devastating defeat last September by the Feds vacating many of the firm's most valuable patents?
Finally, does anyone have any ideas about how the dispute with Hynix will be resolved? I read recently that the CEO of the S. Korean company had spoken to a newspaper in his own country indicating that the two sides had gotten together to confer about a possible settlement. Then I read Hynix had filed to ask the judge to look at "new evidence" that should overturn the royalty obligation that the courts hold they must pay at some rate to be decided after the submission of briefs and oral arguments scheduled for next month. I hope we get either a settlement or a court decision on the amount of the bill before the holidays. I am thinking RMBS should get at least $150 million from Hynix either in a settlement or from the court ruling. Does that sound about right? I noticed that RMBS is still going to claim "damages" before the judge even though he has declared that their claim should be reasonable and nondiscriminatory.
I had been a long time investor in Rambus until the big debacle! This is truly a "looser" of a company! Rambus has never had a clear cut win in it litigation efforts. When they settled; it was pretty much for "nothing" since the courts was going to put the squeeze on them and they just settled. Infineon, Samsung, Nvidia, Intel.
Rambus has had to pay in court litigation more then $100-$150 million in total since 1999 and counting. Just the California SF Micron/Hynix defeat cost them over $28 million in payments!
If I remember; Intel gets a free ride on Rambus patent profolio for only $40 million! What a deal! Rambus just cannot generate any business from it IPs since their potential customers have learn how to overcome most of Rambus IPs by just waiting for JEDEC to pretty much reverse engineer it and have the manufacturers fight it out in court! It is very cheap way of getting technology for pennies on the dollar and weaken Rambus even more! You got to love the strategy!
