    Good news about AXP

On March 24, the Wall Street Journal reported the following: "American Express Co. saw its market share increase in 1997 for the first time in a decade, while MasterCard's share
dwindled. Industry leader Visa U.S.A. increased its piece of the market."

In addition, there is a story about AXP in the March issue of SmartMoney magazine:

"Credit-Card SOS -- When you have an accident far away from home, the right card can bring you comfort.

Bernie Hiller made a solo trip to S. Africa in November to fulfill his dream of playing Golf magazine's 'Top 100 Courses.' Hiller, 69, an insurance agent in Merrick, NY, was just barely one round away from reaching his goal when he collapsed on the 14th hole of a course near Sun City with the classic symptoms of a heart attack.

After Hiller was taken to the nearest hospital, he demanded that the doctors call his cardiologist in New York. No dice. Hiller flashed his American Express Platinum Card. Within five minutes, his cardiologist was on the line to S. Africa.

If the thought of a travel emergency like this seems unlikely to you, consider this: Nearly one out of every five people who get sick while traveling needs hospitalization, according to estimates from the International Association of Medical Assistance to Travelers. And life-threatening accidents happen even when you're in great shape.

AmEx's Travel Emergency Assistance program, included under the platinum card $300 membership umbrella, isn't the only option. MasterCard's Master Assist program, which will cost you anywhere from nothing to $40, provides some limited emergency protection, but won't pay for evacuation services.

'The [AmEx] card is worth its weight in platinum,' Hiller says. 'Anybody who travels...and doesn't have it is playing Russian roulette.'"

I think WINSTONJMAN is right about how if you have the AmEx Platinum Card, you are treated like a king.
