There. I said it. If these doctored coins are costing PCGS hundreds of thousands of dealers per year (this qtr according to the lawsuit, one dr'd coin cost them $90k), then PCGS needs to increase fees for the high dollar coins.
According to their fee schedule http://www.pcgs.com/grading_list.chtml a $100k coin only costs $100 to verify for life. a $200k coin only costs $250 to verify and guarantee for life. coins over that only cost $600...for life.
How about this. coins over $100k cost 1% of the estimated worth of the coin if you want a guarantee for life, otherwise they will charge the above fee just to verify but with no guarantee. Seems like a small fee to charge for a lifetime guarantee. so a $1M coin will cost $10k. A $200k coin will cost $2k. Seems like a fair amount to charge for such a large lifetime guarantee.
This way all the coin dr's can send their coins to NGC and then NGC name will become worthless. PCGS has the name and needs to charge for it.
This would affect what? Maybe 1/2 of 1% of all coin collectors? If that. Maybe even 1/10 of 1%. But it would eliminate about 90% of their liability of their guarantee.
