    Tax Question

The 1099's that I have seen are issued by the county. One of them was for a coupla hundred-no problema with line 21. The four K one had to go on Sch C-however the lady was savvy enough, after being educated, to come up with enough deductions that it didn't cost her much.

    Any one else on this?

    • The correct way to report this would be to put it on line 21 and report it as a bonus. It is not self-employment income as the teacher wouldn't have received it if she wasn't already employed by a school district as a teacher. It also is not subject to any other of the employment taxes (like FICA), since it was not paid to the teacher by the school district who employed her (unless the county actually runs the school district). A similar situation would be a car salesman who sells a car that the manufacturer pays a bonus. He's not an employee of the manufacturer, he's employed by the dealership. It is reported on line 21.
