Report: Dewhurst accuses campaign aide of stealing as much as $1 million

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is accusing his campaign manager, Kenneth “Buddy” Barfield, of stealing at least $600,000 — and possibly more than $1 million — in campaign funds, the Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

According to Dewhurst’s campaign, Barfield overstated the amount of money the campaign raised in his reports to the Texas Ethics Commission, allowing him to cover his tracks after removing funds for his own personal use.

Barfield, a longtime GOP consultant in the state, managed Dewhurst’s 2012 run for Senate and his 2010 reelection bid as lieutenant governor.

Dewhurst and his top aides confronted Barfield about the money and Barfield offered to repay it, but was unable to do so. At that point, on Dec. 20, Dewhurst asked the local district attorney’s office for an investigation and filed revised reports to the ethics commission.

Dewhurst was “shocked and dismayed that a former senior trusted adviser would steal from the campaign account for his own personal gain,” said Dewhurst spokesman Rob Johnson. “The proper authorities have been contacted and we will work with them and trust that the matter will be handled appropriately.”

Dewhurst spent almost $20 million of his own money on his Senate bid but lost in a landslide to tea party-backed Republican Ted Cruz.
