With 142 hedge funds holding long positions in the latest round of 13F filings from the SEC, American International Group, Inc. (NYSE:AIG) takes this crown, and the back half of 2012 was truly a comeback story. Hedgies’ interest in the insurer spiked by 80% in Q3 and after 21 of the funds we track bought shares in Q4, 142 are now bullish on AIG.

Considering that retail investors are still spooked and many mutual funds have only recently been able to buy AIG (given the treasury's final sale), it's not too surprising that demand and volume have been lagging. This is not expected to be a banner quarter, nor 2013 a banner year. Unless there's an upside surprise tomorrow, most of us will have to wait until 2014 to see AIG hit its stride. FWIT, I'm all in.
