China to replace coal with Natural Gas

This story is the wave of the future. China does not like the terrible press it is getting regarding large particulate and horrific pollution levels in it's cities.

Beijing aims to switch from coal to natural gas

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Beijing plans to build four natural gas power-generating stations by the end of next year to replace coal-fired plants, the municipal government said.

The initiative is expected to cost $7.8 billion, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Monday. The switch to gas, says Beijing's Municipal Commission of Development and Reforms, will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 10,000 tons.

The new plants will generate 7.2 gigawatts of power.

    • If they didn't like bad press why would they continue using dirty fossil fuels at all? Natural gas may be cleaner during the burn, but extracting natural leaks methane, contaminates ground water, and uses millions of gallons of water
The problem with China's air pollution is the quality of coal they use is garbage and very high in sulfur. America's coal is much cleaner in comparison. The process of burning the coal has much room for improvement, they should be spending the money there instead.
China don't care, China don't give a shawt.

    • what you say is true, but the natgas will come from the US via the new Panama Canal expansion route which will able to handle vessels almost twice the size carrying natgas, freon, propane etc. to China and India. But this will mean more demand and higher prices. I am in the Meat Industry and I remember 20 yrs ago when skirt steak was almost given away,1.69 per lb., and then came Japan and others importing beef cuts like skirt steak and flank steak and now because of the exports these cuts are now through the roof at well over 10.00 a pound. Cadium is also point on imo in saying that China hasn't any of their own to speak about so guess who has the mother-load, the USA. This will cause prices of natgas to soar and coal will be in more demand because it will again be the most economical but will have plenty of room to rise also and a full-blown recovery in coal will emerge in the states. India is building coal burning power plants like crazy and we will be supplying those also with cleaner burning coal than is available anywhere near that country. If you went to sleep and woke up in 2016 your ACI shares would knock you for a loop.

    • Wishful thinking, if ONLY that China actually have the natural gas that they desperately seek which is in severe short supply. A better wishful thinking would be that it would be nice for China to own a magic wander which could easily whip out unlimited supply of free and clean energy.

Headline news yesterday, China is gripping with severe natural gas shortage:

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

    • Wow. China will replace coal with natural gas and run their country on 7.2GW. What energy efficient people.
