As of 8:00 AM, S&P Futures are UP 5.7

    the truth hurts
    gvg got slammed
    ampex got
    slammed
    cmx got slammed
    in 5 years video editing
    programs
will be like word processing programs they will simply
    come with the box

    remember wang word processing
    machines

    or how about lynotype

    or upright
    movieolas

avid has a great interface but the market will simply
not let them charge 90,000 for 25,000 worth of
    hardware forever

avid's best chance would be to be
aquired and have the aquirer to
    blow out the software
at consumer prices ie: under 1000.

    • At NAB I saw that Avid has aggressive new
management, is diversifying their product line, cutting
overhead and continuing to provide excellent media
creation tools at a wide variety of price levels. FCP
'sounds' like a threat, but is very far from a
      professional editing machine.

      It is apparent from the
majority of the posts on this board that few contributors
have any idea what is going on at Avid or in their
market space. And based on the poor grammar and
spelling, one must wonder what level of intelligence is
represented here. I would love to exchange thoughts with some
of the brighter readers without having to slog
through all the mindless, ill-informed banter.

      I'm
sure many of these individuals will now bash me before
rushing off to other BBs to post more foul-mouthed
personal insults and misinformation... oh, if they would
only stay there. I'm afraid this is an indication of
the kind of people who are driving the market crazy
and making it so unpredictable. At any rate, don't
count AVID out just yet. They have a strong market
position and seem to be holding on to it quite well, while
      reaching for more.

      • Dear at_the_party -

        I seldom post on this
board because the level of discourse is so poor. Now
that you've arrived, maybe we can raise the
        bar.

I edit sound for a living. That means I (and
virtually every other professional editor in the country,)
use ProTools from Avid's Digidesign division. It's
the standard in the studio - and now it's become the
standard for every garage band and amateur editor as
        well.

The Digi001 ProTools product is professionally
        compliant,(24 track - 24 bit,) yet sells for under $1,000. No -
it's not a "mass market" consumer item. It's a new
tool for a new market and (according to the conference
call,) is selling as fast as they can make
        them.

The new Avid management team (headed by Krall,)
developed this product. They showed their Windows '98
version (as promised) at NAB (even though I'll never
abandon my Mac G4,) and continue to lead the field on the
top and bottom rungs of the marketplace.

        If
they can lead the other Avid divisions with the same
sense of pride, innovation and great customer support,
there is every reason to believe the share price will
return to the lofty levels of
        yesteryear.

      • Naming David Krall brings closure to the CEO
mystery....cost-cutting measures, coupled with SoftImage write-offs
eliminated over time make a powerful case for a much higher
        stock price IF you can:
1 - Complete the circle with
        a world-class Investor Relations Department
        2-
        Revisit distribution model to:
        a - maximize
        growth
b - make the "reconnect with our customers" message
        a reality
Strike while the "iron is hot"
