My apologies to you - I cannot find anything to confirm this on the internet but I spoke to someone knowledgeable on the Whole Foods matter and evidently that merger has gone through.
With yesterday's developments at Depot The only side of a merger they could be on would be the selling side.
I agree. Those rumors have been swirling for at least the past year. Something will happen though, it's just a matter of the timing. There are too many companies struggling with weak sales and heavy debt in this industry. Sometimes a merger is exactly what underperforming companies need and what the stockholders demand. Odland better cook the books if he wants to keep his job!!!
CEXP just completed their DD on a potential sale of the company. Many stockholders are unhappy with the company's performance and would like to see parts sold, specifically NA operations. The new chief of NA has a long relationship with ODP. When the price is right they will be sold off, it just depends if it's SPLS or ODP who is the buyer. Depot has been aggressive with their acquisitions in recent years so my guess it that it will be them. An OMX /CEXP merger would be a complete disaster, but both seem to make terrible decisions and you never know.
If CEXP and Max merge you would have a giant player with zero management talent. Their situation would continue to deteriorate from a larger base. That does not mean that it will not happen just wont be good in my opinion.
I think that Depot or Staples - especially Staples is likely to make a move on CEXP but the price has to be right. Better odds than a OMX, CEXP merger.
The Whole Foods resolution is the thing to keep an eye on. If the FTC allows that one go through OMX will be taken out by Depot or Staples in my opinion and fast.
Take a look at this link regarding the whole foods situation and how it relates to SPLS/ODP merger if you have time.
