I think many are anticipating when OMEX will recover the first silver from the Gairsoppa and Mantola shipwrecks.
I expect they will not have to wait until all of the silver is recovered until they put of a PR that they have found the first silver. Who can guess the date of the press release for first silver?
I am thinking May 22nd.
Thanks Jeff, much appreciated! I actually wasn't in Tampa, unfortunately I'm still very much sequestered in exams and papers much farther north. I'm pretty sure I know where the rumor came from, though :)
I can't find reliable data about the seasons in that area (no historical buoy data around that I can find at least), which raises the uncertainty of this estimate quite a bit. Given the expense of leasing what I presume to be a large and powerful vessel for the recovery operation, Odyssey will probably plan to start as soon as the conditions have a very high probability of being goo (aka they won't be sitting in port waiting for the weather to improve while paying for a ship/crew. Though it will extend the wait a bit, its definitely the right decision. As far as finding the silver goes, I highly doubt that the tea will be removed in too careful a manner, I would imagine that they'll announce their first silver recovery within a week at most at the site. All together, I'm going to say roughly May 1st, 2012 as the announcement that some small quantity of silver has been recovered from the site.
Quite a nice piece of machinery, and a neat way of sending the other required wiring down and retrieving it without it having to support it's own weight (the composite cable does all the work).
