There's an article in today's UK Times titled 'Blunder lets looters pounce on HMS Victory'. It says that at least 2 and possibly as many as 6 bronze guns were illicitly taken from the site. Odyssey apparently published a report that details the damage done to the site and blames English Heritage for publishing the wreck's co-ordinates. It cites Lord Lingfield's comments that the shipwreck must be excavated now to prevent further damage and interestingly, it says that the MHF hopes to hold an exhibition of the items recovered so far!
The bottom line is that this seems like a perfect development for Odyssey in silencing the critics and allowing the company to move forward with the excavation without resistance. For those shorts who have been hoping that the momentum would swing against Odyssey and that the excavation would be stalled, this is a big blow. Although it's unfortunate that a few cannons were looted from the site and that it had to suffer some damage, I view this as a big positive development for accelerating the excavation of one of the most valuable shipwreck projects in the world.
With the Seabed Worker on the move, the momentum on the Victory growing, and gold and silver moving higher on expectations of more money printing the potential reward this summer is getting very exciting for this little shipwreck company.
I didn't read the article....just your summary...but here's my read. It went from one missing cannon to "up to" 6 missing cannon in only a few days time?
First...I'm a wee bit sick and tired of hearing "bad news" from foreign newspapers vs. from a OMEX shareholder news release. It shows just how much Odyssey fears their shareholders.
And they will pay by lower stock prices. If you can't trust your own company to tell you how bad the Victory site has been plundered...then that's pretty bad.
It's also alarming in the sense that they aren't telling us what ELSE may be missing from the wreck site.
If you had OMEX telling the world there's a billion dollars on board...and you've already put it in your head that you're going to loot 6 cannon...what exactly stops you from looting MORE than 6 cannon?
So my question to OMEX would be....what further damage have they seen at the site? and do they believe that potentially more than 6 cannon were taken.
As I said....forget about the Victory...concentrate on the silver ships. OMEX has already bungled the Victory....as usual.
Marketput.z - since the bulk of your existence is spent mired in "what if's" and manipulative condescension, here is something for you to consider:
WHAT IF the company has already received Victory permission in secret and is on the cusp of recovering some (or more) of the vulnerable/valuable artifacts on the site?
WHAT IF they accomplished a small part of the most precious numismatic recovery already during the recent week+ that they were over the site?
WHAT IF all of your empty noise is nothing more than an affirmation that the company has a trick or two up it's sleeve that you never saw coming and that your narrow mind cannot comprehend?
Has the thought ever crossed your mind that you may not know everything about everything? If not, you should consider the possibility, although I'm sure not for long since you obviously take exception to any comment that doesn't fit your agenda.
Sure a couple cannon may have been snatched (not a good thing), and of course the recovery crew will perform a methodical in-depth and well-documented archaeological excavation process for the entire debris field that will take months if not years(comes with the territory).
BUT - just for one moment, pause your naysayer's agenda and admit that the positive scenario I've described is just as likely as the negative and specious conclusions that you've presented - because it is.
The simple fact remains that you (and we) are not in the inner circle, that we can't know everything because of that fact, and that real secrets are easily kept from those who are too eager to creatively pounce on incomplete or inaccurate information. All of this parliamentary posturing by Lord so-and-so could be nothing more than a glorious head-fake while the real action quietly and expeditously carries on - misinformation and counterintelligence are nothing new, especially in England and especially in the world of shipwreck recovery.
You can repeat the crying Wolf line ad nauseum, but I think the V situation may possibly be farther along than you or your fellow d-bags would care to admit.
Time is the only things that will help us know for sure, but either way, I still feel bad for any folks who are unfortunate to stumble across your multitude of thinly-veiled pessimistic and jabby posts that you seem to think are wonderfully crafted and logically indisputable.
I honestly don't mind insightful rhetoric from all sides of the aisle, but you somehow seem to reach a new low with each passing day that you frame your comments based on your own jaded introspection while ignoring the signs that impactful and positive news is merely a breath away.
You remind me of a typical bandwagoner Boston or New York fan - when your team loses you think it is a horrible injustice and that the sky is about to fall...when your team wins you puff out your chest and gloat about your infallability and how superior your team has been since the dawn of time. Neither are correct, but that doesn't stop you (or them) since you think know more than everybody and are obligated to tell everybody how things "really" are. You are just like the Fenway and Bronx primadonnas because they can't see past their own noses, and neither can you.
I am eagerly waiting for the day when Odyssey's circumstances change and you cut off your own nose to spite your face, since we all know you'll flip-flop as soon as the tide turns....or will you? I bet that if they found V gold your next step would be to challenge the purity instead of admitting your negative conclusions were wrong (I'm sure you couldn't without your head exploding). What a fun day that will be (and I'm sure Hubert would agree with me).
Disclosure - Yankmees suck, Red Sux swallow, and MarketFaker just plain blows.
"It blames English Heritage for publishing the approximate co-ordinates of the wreck, enabling looters to target it."
And maybe some posters on this board who posted the location.
Will the real dumbass please stand up!
Sorry, danbunch, Jeff...and all...
I was correct again. Odyssey was barely over the Victory site.
Now it has left.
I am once again....correct.
"If the Victory goes out over the site by Saturday and stays there for at least 5 days, I'll admit I called it wrong."
Not 5 days....not 5 months...Odyssey has left the building.
